ORA-27102: out of memory Linux-x86_64 Error: 28: No space left on device

Problem

SQL> startup
ORA-27102: out of memory
Linux-x86_64 Error: 28: No space left on device
SQL>

Reason: shmall is too small, most likely is set to the default setting of 2097152 

Solution:

Check the following parameter value

[root@sbldb2 ~]# cat /proc/sys/kernel/shmall
2097152
[root@sbldb2 ~]#

[root@sbldb2 ~]# getconf PAGE_SIZE
4096
[root@sbldb2 ~]#
[root@sbldb2 ~]#  sysctl -p  
[root@sbldb2 ~]# cat /proc/sys/kernel/shmall

Change shmall value as follows

1073741824

Now try to start Database

[oracle@sbldb2 ~]$ sqlplus

SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.3.0 Production on Wed Mar 12 18:06:33 2014

Enter user-name: /as sysdba
Connected to an idle instance.

SQL> startup
ORACLE instance started.
